Six Sentences by Allison Renner

Fresh Words was my first published Six Sentences piece, on July 30, 2009. I then submitted Rind and it was published on September 26, 2009. Life happened - grad school and all that jazz - so I didn't submit again until 2011; Without You was published on April 6, 2011. Coming of Age was published on June 2, 2012. After that, I never got a response to my submissions. It seems the site closed sometime in 2014. You can still see some other pieces on Six Sentences.

I love writing short pieces because it forces you to only say what's necessary. Do you focus on action or description? Do you have to take out the dialogue, or is the whole piece only dialogue? It's a fun exercise for editing, too - editing a longer piece can be hard when every sentence is your baby. But if you only have six sentences to work with, you have to be brutal.

Check out the podcast episode where my stories were read aloud. You can see more of my writing (including longer pieces) on ThinkAllisonRenner, my home base for freelance writing, proofreading, and editing.
